Y A K U Smart Hydration Assistant

YAKU is a personalized hydration assistant specifically designed for active individuals aged 55-64 in Barcelona, Spain. Its primary objective is to enhance the well-being of elderly residents in Barcelona by effectively and individually measuring their hydration needs and providing real-time alerts on when they should drink water. YAKU features a wristband that users can wear and communicates through a mobile application.

One of YAKU’s key features is its ability to integrate data from other smart devices and AI assistants. This integration allows for a comprehensive and relevant view of users’ biological profiles, considering environmental variables that may directly impact the hydration requirements of older adults.

Additionally, YAKU interacts with social applications that send continuous alerts and recommendations regarding social and recreational activities, such as cultural walking tours or hiking excursions. This feature enables users to actively participate in these activities. Furthermore, YAKU sends alerts to the children and friends of the elderly, keeping them informed about the calendar of activities, hydration status, and overall well-being of the elderly.

This solution proves especially useful in improving the independence and safety of the elderly in Barcelona. Smart devices and connected apps enable constant monitoring and provide additional support when caregivers cannot be physically present. Moreover, it promotes engagement in social and recreational activities, which can enhance the emotional and mental well-being of older adults.

To ensure the effectiveness and safety of YAKU, extensive research conducted by aging technology experts, including physicians and smart technology specialists, has been employed. Collaborations with organizations such as AARP may have contributed to the optimization of the devices and services offered.

PROJECT’S CONCEPT

The main concept of the project is centered around promoting general well-being through a simple smart accessory called YAKU, which means ‘water’ in the language of the Incas. YAKU aims to enhance the well-being of active seniors and society as a whole by fostering a culture of health and making a positive impact on seniors, empowering them to lead safer and more independent lives. Additionally, YAKU aims to empower young talents in Peru by providing opportunities for them to develop their technical skills and become agents of change in our society.

“YAKU will connect with other assistants, cross data, and recommend socio-recreational activities such as hiking and organized walks in your community to its users. YAKU will notify the children and family members, who will have access to the schedule of medical check-ups, social activities, and recreational activities of their parents.”

THE MAIN CHALLENGE

As we age, our dependence, fragility, and vulnerability tend to increase. Moreover, the ongoing effects of climate change have raised the global temperature by 1.1 °C. Consequently, there has been a noticeable rise in cases of osteomuscular injuries and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among older adults, which can be attributed to insufficient hydration.

Recreational sports account for 96% of sudden deaths, including hiking, hiking, and cycling activities. Among these deaths, 63% are attributed to ischemic heart disease. In Catalonia, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is responsible for 30% of all deaths. There is a higher incidence of CVD in men compared to women, with a ratio of 86.8 vs. 61. CVDs are the leading cause of death in both Spain and the United States]. In 2008, the global cost of cardiovascular disease amounted to €192 billion, with an average annual cost per capita of €391.

OUR JOURNEY

Yaku’s journey began in August 2022 when we embarked on the creation of the first prototype of Yaku Assistant. This innovative wearable accessory was designed as a complement to hydration backpacks or harnesses. We collaborated with Silvana Espinoza Gomez, a talented Peruvian electronic engineer, to develop our initial prototype. To learn more about this exciting milestone, you can watch a video showcasing the first prototype at the following link.

Phase 2: Integration Development with AI Assistants, Big Data, and IoT

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, the integration of AI, Big Data, and IoT has become crucial for businesses to thrive. This phase of development focuses on harnessing the power of these technologies to drive productivity, enhance customer experiences, and unlock new opportunities in both B2C and B2B channels.

One key element of this integration is the utilization of biomaterials bracelets. These innovative wearables can collect valuable data from users, enabling businesses to gain insights into their customers’ behaviors and preferences. By leveraging the data gathered through these bracelets, companies can deliver personalized experiences and tailor their products and services to meet the specific needs of their target audience.

To effectively leverage the potential of AI, Big Data, and IoT, a robust marketing strategy is essential. This includes targeting both B2C and B2B channels in the EU and USA markets. By utilizing AI-powered marketing solutions, businesses can optimize their campaigns, identify trends, and target the right audience with the right message at the right time. This comprehensive approach will help maximize customer engagement, drive sales, and foster long-term business relationships.

Regarding investment, the exact amount is yet to be determined (TBD). However, investing in this phase of integration development with assistants, AI, Big Data, and IoT is a strategic decision that can yield significant returns. The adoption of AI and analytics has skyrocketed in recent times, with numerous companies accelerating their AI adoption plans due to the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, virtual assistants and chatbots, powered by AI, have become integral to our daily lives and are here to stay. The combination of IoT and augmented reality (AR) also holds immense potential for unlocking the power of data.

By embracing these technologies and investing in their seamless integration, businesses can stay ahead of the curve, drive innovation, and create a competitive edge in the market. The second phase of integration development with assistants, AI, Big Data, and IoT presents a remarkable opportunity to revolutionize operations, improve customer experiences, and achieve sustainable growth.

YAKU’S CULTURAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT:

By fostering collaborative and inclusive efforts between specialized engineering professionals and the NEET population of the country, we aim to develop initiatives that enhance the well-being of the elderly. Our goal is to create an environment free from division or discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation.

YAKU offers a solution focused on a potential market of 2.41 trillion euros in Catalonia alone. Our company specializes in activities deeply rooted in this region, such as hiking and walking, which are highly recommended for the development and well-being of seniors worldwide. These activities allow people to enjoy nature, discover remote destinations, immerse themselves in local cultures, and contribute to the economic development of the visited communities. Moreover, hiking is considered a sustainable activity with low environmental impact, making it an ideal choice for nature enthusiasts and responsible tourism.

The primary objective of YAKU is to reduce public health spending on cardiovascular disease (CVD) care in Spain and Peru. By promoting adequate hydration and encouraging a healthy lifestyle, YAKU aims to prevent diseases and enhance the quality of life for elderly individuals.

According to the ACCIÓ study in Catalonia, 37 specific business opportunities have been identified for Catalan companies dedicated to the silver economy in 33 countries around the world. More than half of these opportunities are linked to technologies such as digital health, bioengineering and regenerative medicine, and big tech and artificial intelligence. YAKU enters the Category of Manufacturing and Technology Services to Improve the Autonomy and Quality of Life of the Elderly. Only in Catalonia: 115 companies and a market of €1.55 dedicated to technological solutions oriented to the silver economy.

NEXT STEPS

We are currently collaborating with Peruvian students who are members of the iHub at UNHEVAL University in Huanuco, Peru, to develop the second MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for the Yaku Smart Hydration Assistant. This innovative project involves the creation of an upgraded version of a productivity bracelet that is already in development. Leading the project are Maria Javier, CEO of the Mashua Project, and Eduardo Noriega, an Innovation and Social Impact Mentor.
